Adjaye's first ultra-high tower, can it land on Hudson Yards?

Release time:2021-10-29 08:33:10 Author:admin

Plot K, located between West 35th Street and West 36th Street in Manhattan, opposite the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, is currently in the bidding stage. Once completed, the tower plan designed by Adjaye Associates disclosed a few days ago will be designed by Adjaye Associates so far The tallest building.

"Real Estate Weekly" (Real Estate Weekly) first reported on this plan on October 13. A team of developers backed by The Peebles Corporation submitted the bidding proposal and presented it to the bidder Empire State Development Corporation on Thursday. The proposed land is located at 418 11th Avenue, which is part of the Hudson Yards area under Related Companies.

If the Peebles Corporation team plan is finally completed, it will become the new landmark of Hell’s Kitchen, the tallest building in Hudson Yards and the third tallest building in New York City, comparable to the 111 West 57th Street. Adjaye Associates designed a 1,500-foot-tall skyscraper that gradually rises from the bottom to the top, which is the opposite of the typical tower that is large and small. Like the 130 William project on the 66th floor of the financial district, Adjaye Associates also integrated arch elements in this plan and put forward new thinking about traditional arches. The building facade is made up of parallel strips of stone arranged vertically, and the ends are arched (or the bottom of the building is reverse arched).

This motif continues to the bottom of the building-as you can see in the renderings obtained by Patch, the inverted arch elements extend all the way to the ground. Judging from the pictures released so far, the design team used a patchy concrete surface. From a distance, the facade has a pixelated effect.

From a design point of view, this tower will bring a fresh feel to the block filled with glass facades, but from the perspective of architectural planning, it may be difficult to obtain the approval of the local community committee4. The proposed architectural features include commercial office space, theaters, two hotels, a skating rink, outdoor terraces, observation decks, and the new headquarters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Manhattan Central District, but no residential functions. Although there are no relevant requirements in New York State, the community committee 4 requires that all design plans for this plot include affordable housing.

If The Peebles Corporation's proposal wins the bid, the K plot project will be the first large-scale project developed, designed and constructed by blacks in New York. Patch noted that the selected construction contractor McKissack Group is the "oldest minority/female-owned design and construction" enterprise in the United States. The Empire State Development Corporation has not yet revealed when it will announce the winning bid. For the latest news, please continue to pay attention to the relevant reports of ArchDaily.
